Gravette AP Chem Class

On Thursday, January 16th, Mrs. Brittany Lovell's AP Chemistry class at Gravette High School had the opportunity to visit the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock. The trip offered students a first-hand look at how their classroom lessons apply to real-world forensic science.

During the tour, led by Alex McDonald, the students explored several departments critical to criminal investigations, including CODIS (Combined DNA Index System), Digital Evidence, Forensic Chemistry, Forensic DNA, Forensic Toxicology, and Friction Ridge, where fingerprint analysis is conducted.

One highlight of the visit was seeing the Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer in action. Mrs. Lovell explained, "We talk about how this machine works to analyze unknown chemical substances in the classroom in both Chemistry I and AP, but most high school labs won't have them because they are extremely expensive."

The tour concluded with a visit to the morgue, where the morning’s autopsies had just wrapped up. McDonald answered a variety of questions about careers in forensic science, the education required for those roles, and even inquiries like, "What's the craziest case you guys have ever analyzed?" The students also learned about the accuracy of forensics portrayed in popular crime dramas and podcasts.

The experience was sure to leave a lasting impression on the students, building a deeper appreciation for forensic science and its role in solving crimes. Mrs. Lovell remarked that the trip brought to life the concepts her students study in class, inspiring them to explore potential careers in chemistry and forensic science.
